Canon EOS-R vs. RED & Arri Alexa – that’s a combo you usually don’t see being compared to each other. Let alone being used in conjunction. But Potato Jet never ceases to amaze when it comes to weird camera comparisons.
Canon EOS-R – Video vs. Cinema
Putting these cameras against each other might look odd ad first when you consider the price difference. But putting the footage side by side it’s actually surprisingly close at least in a Youtube video. Even for experienced eyes, it’s amazing how far mirrorless “photo” cameras have come with their video capabilities.

Of course when it comes down to the big screen and heavy post-production RED and Arri cameras are blowing the Canon EOS-R camera out of the water. But looking at a price difference at the amount of a new car, it’s incredible that you can get that close with a fragment of what you’d have to shell out for these oscar movie cameras. And let’s be honest: most of us run&gun shooters will just slap a LUT on the footage and that’s it.
C-Log and 10-Bit External
With the internal log (C-log) and external 10-bit recording, you will still get enough room to work with if you want to stretch the footage a little more than just basic color grading. There is really not much left to miss nowadays when you put your hands on a Canon EOS-R or a similar mirrorless full format DSLR.
Yes, it’s probably not fair to compare these 2 classes. But it’s really amazing to see how well the Canon EOS-R is keeping up with these 2 cinema heavy weights.
