3D Photo Video Effect in After Effects

Here is a quick technique from Andreas Hem to spice up your videos by enhancing selected scenes in your footage in After Effects.

Andreas is masking out the main element by using the roto brush tool. For a better effect you might want to mask out other foreground or background elements in your scene. In this case Andreas is masking out the stairs on the foreground.

To obtain more footage of the wall behind the foreground (the stairs) he is finding a frame later in the video and aligning it with the video. This will be the clean plate for the final animation.

Now all elements are being imported back into the composition and aligned with the video right where the effect should begin. Now turn all the layers into 3D layers and adjust the timing with your footage. When everything lines up perfectly it looks like the video is freezing right in the middle and the camera is moving like a bullet time effect.
